From Librarian to Doctorate Holder: Adult Student Proves It’s Never Too Late

Growing up, Jordyn Horner always found joy in learning. That passion for knowledge carried her through life and shaped her career path. Starting as a special education assistant, she helped children overcome challenges and discover their potential. Over time, she transitioned into teaching art and music to students in PreK-7 and became a librarian. Yet, through it all, one dream lingered in the back of her mind—a dream of earning a Doctor of Education degree. With her commitments, she needed educational flexibility that would fit into her life rather than disrupt it – and she found it with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s Vols Online program.

The thought of pursuing a doctorate was intimidating. Jordyn’s responsibilities were already extensive – balancing a career, personal commitments, and side work as a bartender and beer guide. When she discovered the Doctor of Education program, it felt like everything she had been looking for. The small group size meant a more personalized learning experience, and the entirely online format offered the adaptability she needed. The support from the department was immediately evident, and its outstanding reputation further sealed her decision. She knew several successful people who graduated from UT and felt reassured knowing that others before her had made significant achievements after walking this path.

Enrolling in the Doctor of Education program was exciting, but it wasn’t without challenges. Balancing studies with work and personal life demanded discipline and careful time management. She created a strict yet adaptable schedule, carving out dedicated weekly hours for coursework while leaving space for moments of joy and relaxation.

“Pursuing a graduate degree was always a personal goal for me because I love to learn and grow. I wanted to ensure that I wouldn’t be held back or miss out on career opportunities due to a lack of certification or qualifications.

– Jordyn Horner, EdD, Educational Leadership student

The experience itself has been transformative. The coursework, while demanding, is incredibly enriching. Jordyn has gained deep expertise in educational leadership and learned valuable research methodologies that have honed her professional skills and deepened her understanding of a leader. The fellowship within her cohort has been exceptional. Despite initial apprehension about online isolation, the relationships she built with her peers and professors have been incredible. They supported each other, shared knowledge, and built a community that feels tangible even though it exists in a virtual space. The university also did its part by fostering a sense of belonging, hosting virtual events, and consistently communicating opportunities to engage further.

Jordyn is proud of her achievements through the Vols Online program. She will be the first doctor in her family, a milestone of immense personal and familial significance. Working towards this degree has expanded her career potential and strengthened her confidence. Her ability to persevere through challenges, juggle multiple responsibilities, and thrive in an online learning environment are traits she will use for the rest of her life.

After she graduates this spring, there are numerous career possibilities. She could lead education at the district or state level, supporting policy and systemic improvements. She could also teach future librarians at the university level or explore roles in educational technology. The experience wasn’t just about achieving a personal goal but defining who she is and what she can accomplish. She says the program’s flexibility, the support she received, and the incredible sense of community helped her unlock potential she hadn’t fully realized. Looking back on this chapter of her life, she’ll remember it as a time of growth, discovery, and empowerment. Jordyn says it’s not always easy for anyone wondering if they can balance a doctoral program with life’s many demands, but it’s gratifying and a step worth taking.
