From the Gym to the Classroom: Ryan’s Online MBA Journey
For many of us, learning feels like something we either left behind or plan to get to “someday.” But Ryan Metzger’s story challenges that notion. For her, learning isn’t a box to check—it’s a lifelong pursuit. As she works toward earning her Online Master’s of Business Administration at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, through Vols Online, she’s proving it’s never too late—or too busy—to grow.
Born and raised in Chicago, Ryan has always been a go-getter and a self-described lifelong learner. She juggled earning her bachelor’s degree in exercise science and health promotion with a minor in strength and conditioning while competing as a collegiate gymnast. Those years sharpened her time-management skills, a strength she’s carried into every phase of her life.
After earning her bachelor’s, Ryan earned her master’s in exercise physiology and dove headfirst into the world of competitive weightlifting. Over the next decade, she not only competed nationally—winning multiple medals and setting records in Virginia—but also coached Division 1 athletes across the southern United States.
Despite the intense physical and mental requirements of training, competing, and coaching, along with a packed schedule and life’s demands, Ryan wasn’t done learning. She wanted to expand her skill set and open new doors professionally. That’s why she turned to Vols Online.
Perhaps the most common question from prospective students is how do you balance coursework with a busy life? For Ryan, the Online MBA at the Haslam College of Business offered flexibility through asynchronous classes, allowing her to fit her studies into her demanding routine. In her words: “The MBA program offered a complete online option, which worked with my professional working schedule. The flexibility offered with an online program vs. in-person was a massive selling point since my required working hours were more demanding and less predictable.”
“I believe that no matter where this degree takes me, I will find benefits in completing the program and finding opportunities to progress professionally.”
– Ryan Metzger, class of 2026, Online Master of Business Administration
Another question often asked is about course offerings – what can you expect to learn? The Online MBA covers topics like leadership, finance, marketing, and strategy. For Ryan, this meant building on her background in sports and athletic development, while gaining the business acumen needed to launch her own company. She also says that learning online did not make her feel less connected to her peers: “Since many people in the cohort are in their professional careers as well, there is comfort in knowing others are balancing similar obstacles in their day. I also appreciate the diversity and network built in my cohort, since students are not required to be local.”
With her graduation just around the corner in summer 2026, Ryan is gearing up for an exciting new chapter. Armed with the knowledge and skills she’s gained, she’s already taken a bold step forward by launching her own business, AXIS S&C, dedicated to helping universities enhance their strength and conditioning programs. Her goal? To use her expertise to make a real difference, empowering even more student-athletes to thrive both on and off the field.
Ryan’s story reminds us that learning doesn’t have to stop when life gets busy. Whether you’re balancing a career, family, or personal goals, there’s always room to grow. If you’re willing to take that first step, like Ryan, you might discover that the best is yet to come.
