One Student’s Inspiring Path to Success
When life challenges you, it’s natural to feel like your dreams are slipping away. But for Candace West, a determined single mom, those challenges became a story of resilience, purpose, and hope. She’s a Vols Online student at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, showing us that hard isn’t a reason to quit— it’s a reason to push forward.
At 19, Candace became a young mother, balancing the demands of raising her child while working to support her family. What began as a practical job – working in childcare to secure discounted tuition for her son – grew into a passion for advocating for children and families.
Still, Candace dreamed of more. She dreamed of earning a degree in Education, specifically in early childhood, of walking across the stage at graduation, and of building a brighter future for her two boys. For years, she thought it wasn’t possible. Between work, family, and life’s demands, how could she ever find the time? Then, a coworker mentioned Vols Online—a program that offered the flexibility she needed to pursue her dreams without sacrificing her responsibilities. That moment changed everything.
Now enrolled in the Interdisciplinary Early Childhood program, Candace is excelling as a Vols Online student. The flexibility of online learning helps her manage her two jobs, her role as a mom, and her academic ambitions. She’s realized that challenges like time management can be overcome through discipline, organization, and a strong support network. She says, “The teachers, coaches, advisors, and the entire UT team have been incredible at supporting me every step of the way. They are always available to help and truly want to see their students succeed.”
“Because of online learning, I’ve been able to grow in my career, expand my knowledge, and invest in a better future for myself and my children.”
– Candace West, class of 2027, Bachelor of Science in Education
Her proudest achievement? Taking the leap. At 39, she could have let fear or excuses hold her back, but instead she chose to invest in herself and her family’s future. And even though she’s already accomplished so much, she knows the best is still to come—walking across that stage as a University of Tennessee graduate.
Candace understands how overwhelming it can be to take that first step. Her advice for anyone thinking about joining Vols Online is simple: “Just do it. Don’t let fear or excuses hold you back. You’re worth investing in, and the support you’ll get from UT will make all the difference.”
Her story showcases the power of perseverance, the strength of a mother’s love, and the life-changing opportunities that come with saying “yes” to your dreams.
