Online support helps student continue education

James Slay has shaped minds and classrooms for over 13 years. He knows the power of creating a close school community. What he didn’t know was how that sense of community would help him when tragedy struck while he was a graduate student at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK).

Slay was working while attending school when he completed his Master of Education at UT. He is now pursuing a Doctor of Education (EdD) in Educational Leadership through Vols Online.

I want to make a difference in our educational system by promoting an equitable education for all students. This program was the best fit for me as I trust in the leadership at UTK.

The EdD Educational Leadership program follows a cohort-based learning model, meaning students start the program together, take the same classes concurrently, and graduate at the same. Slay said his cohort was able to learn together, support one another, and become more like a family. The emotional support this model provides is an essential aspect of the online program, but it also facilitates immense learning opportunities.

For Slay, the support he received from his professors and family-like cohort was instrumental in helping him through an unimaginably painful time. In December of 2022, he lost his sister in a car accident and his home to a fire.

“Although we were on break, my cohort and professors reached out immediately to help support me through that difficult time,” he said.

For many students, one catastrophic event would be enough to quit, let alone two. However, Slay’s desire to advocate for students did not diminish. With the support of his Educational Leadership family, he persevered and continued to gain invaluable skills in interpreting educational policies and laws.

As a father, husband and educator, Slay understands the demands of life’s responsibilities. When maintaining the balance between school, work and home became difficult, he reminded himself to believe in the process and not to give up.

“At times, it may seem that everything else is working against your success, but you have caring adults in the program who will see you through those times if you trust the process,” he said, reflecting on his experience. “I highly recommend the online EdD Educational Leadership program!”
