Volunteer opportunity gives RN to BSN students hands-on experience
Remote Area Medical (RAM) hosted its first free health, dental and vision clinic of 2022 in Knoxville in February of 2022.
As a part of the eTHRIVE grant, the college has partnered with Remote Area Medical. The partnership will help to accomplish the goals of the eTHRIVE project.
“A strong emphasis of the eTHRIVE project is to expand the capacity to substantially benefit care for rural, underserved communities by creatively and skillfully preparing nurses for holistic, empathic public health nursing care,” said Lisa Davenport, clinical associate professor, and project director. “All of which has fidelity to a worthy purpose.”
The eTHRIVE team’s shared vision is to co-design and implement meaningful virtual-based simulation and experiential learning opportunities for RN to BSN students and enhance training for the RAM volunteer nursing workforce.
This grant provides experiential learning offerings for a dual audience, the online RN to BSN program, and the RAM nursing workforce.

Throughout the duration of the event, RAM served nearly 900 patients, providing more than $551,000 worth of free medical services to the community.
The pioneering cohort of six RN to BSN students were present at the clinic and aided in providing care to attendees. Additionally, twenty-two students participated in a synchronous virtual simulation experience, forging the way for the innovative initiative.
The mission of Ram, a major nonprofit organization, is to prevent pain and reduce suffering by providing quality, free healthcare to people in need of services relating to those areas.
