Is your goal to earn a Master of Science degree with a Major in Teacher Education? The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, offers an online master’s degree program in Teacher Education, with a Practitioner Concentration that leads to a teaching license and a Student Teaching Concentration with a Specialization in Deaf Education for those seeking an initial Tennessee teaching license in special education (hearing).
These two Teacher Education concentrations are offered via fully remote coursework designed to meet the needs of online students. Earn Your Master’s in the Field of Teacher Education
The MS with a Major in Teacher Education offers two concentrations to meet the educational needs of professionals advancing their careers in teacher education.
The Practitioner Concentration leads to licensure in various content areas, including ASL education, art education, deaf education, elementary education, English education, English as a second language, math education, science education, social sciences education, special education, and world language education.
The Student Teaching Concentration/Deaf Education Specialization is designed for individuals seeking an initial Tennessee teaching license through online programs. After completing most of their coursework, students will enroll in a 15-week student teaching experience. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be recommended for a Tennessee teaching license in special education (hearing).
Admission Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum 2.7 cumulative GPA
- Applicants must submit an online graduate application to the Office of Graduate Admissions.
Admission to the ASL Education practitioner concentration requires a minimum level of Advanced on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) or 3+ on ASL Proficiency Interview (ASLPI). Admission to the Deaf Education Practitioner concentration and the Student Teaching concentration in Deaf Education requires a minimum level of Intermediate-Plus on the SLPI or 3 on ASLPI.

Applying concepts, principles, techniques, and models from educational psychology facilitates student learning and creates effective classroom environments.
Characteristics and needs of students with disabilities and diverse learners with an emphasis on educational implications. Techniques, strategies, and resources for teaching and assessing students with diverse learning, behavioral, medical, and/or socio-cultural characteristics, and special education requirements and other relevant laws.
Examination of contemporary trends and issues in education.
Explores learning with educational technologies in school and the community. Will consider learning at home, through online and social-media-based contexts, and in public spaces. Will examine how practices related to communication, assessment, and learning can be modified or transformed through educational technologies. Will also discuss strategies and techniques for effectively integrating technologies into teaching.
